Mission StatementLast Revision 4/21/06 Historically, vaccine development has been quite empirical, using different forms of a pathogen or its proteins as immunogens to elicit a protective immune response. These studies were usually performed by groups interested in the disease as opposed to “vaccinologists.” While this approach has been successful, standard immunization protocols have not produced protective immunity to a number of “problem” pathogens, such as HIV, HCV and malaria.
